Background

In November, 99 1800WineShop called us.

They came to us with a tall order - they were ready for a new corporate image... Deadline: 6 weeks. They had already been working with another design firm, but after considerable time and expense, they found that the design concepts were already far down the wrong path.

To make things worse they had already purchased media advertising on radio and direct mail for the 1999 christmas season. This meant that there were about 6 weeks before the complete package had to be in hand!

1800WineShop is both an internet and a traditional mail order wine club. The image above demonstrates vividly the direction that the corporate identity project had taken.

The project deliverables:

Corporate Logo, Corporate Identity system including:

Letterhead,Business cards, envelopes etc. 16 page Catalog, Monthly Wine Club Shipping Box - 1,2 & 3 bottles, Wine Gift Box Packaging, Gift Card - Wine Club intro Card, Witners Tasting Card, Wine Gift Box Label and New Web Site User Interface, Color scheme & Graphics.

However this time they had closed a round of major financing and were ready to invest in a branding project.

1-800-Wine-Shop.com is a long difficult name...

The company name is based on a telephone number, then dot com was added, resulting in:

The name is now used to both imply a telephone number as well as a web address. Working with these two requirements, here is what we came up with:

By using a vertical bar between the 1 & the 8 the confusion of what the web address might be is solved, e.g. is it
http://www.1-800-wineshop.com? since you cannot type it in. The dot com block implies that not only can you dial the telephone number, but it is also a web address.

Then after client acceptance, we established the identity colors:
